Sarsparilla

Sarsparilla, aka, Rootbeer in the Schofield home, the LYLE Schofield home, is very important. It is not about the random or most convenient rootbeer in the store. It is about researching, hunting down, even MAKING your own concoction at home. Pictured above is just a random sample of all the rootbeer we currently have in the Schofield abode. To your left is the Hansen's rootbeer from Trader Joes. We have never tried this brand, so Lyle wanted to give it a whirl. Centered is one of our favorites so far. It was picked up at Whole Foods and given to us by a friend. It is not just Virgils Rootbeer (which actually, a day before we had in the house as well, but we had drank it already). This specific beer has nutmeg added to it. Finally, in the back is something Lyle picked up online which he cannot wait to put together. It is a rootbeer making kit. Lyle knew he would like it, so to be prepared, he ordered a refill just to be sure. As luck would have it, the best rootbeer he's ever had was at a local bbq place we enjoy called waterside bbq. It was made with sugarcane from, you guess it--LOUISIANA! That's what I'm talkin' 'bout!

You can safely say if you walk into our home at any given time, there will be rootbeer available. If not, then it must be our grocery day to pick up some more. Lyle also has recently tried ginger beer (basically any kind of "legal beer" he can drink) and he was NOT happy with it. It literally tasted like ginger root...yuck! I haven't tried it yet, but if it's anything like red bull cola, then I am OUT! I will post an update when Lyle makes his first batch ever of home made root beer so you can see the results. My hope is that he makes it in time to enjoy on a sunny new york day (which means he can wait a while). And if it's not perfect, then you KNOW the chemist will be back in the kitchen once again to make up a new batch. Out of the 51 brands of Sarsparilla (yes there are 51), we have tasted about 10. We can't wait to try them all and one day provide our very own consumer report.

That's funny.. I remember homemade rootbeer - the kind made with dry ice. Yum!

Rich loves ginger beer.. It has some major kick to it. He also likes birch beer (more like a sarsaparilla).

um... sorry, I know it's yet another comment...

I don't think I've tried Hansen's root beer, but they make a really tasty cherry vanilla creme soda. Yes, I'm one of those people who likes creme soda.

Lyle and Benny could be the best of friends. Ben has done his own Root Beer Research project... see here:

Tell the Lyle to try a few of Ben's faves---Faygo, Buckin' (a Jackson Hole brew), Abita, Americana and Bulldog.

Then next time you guys are in town, we can have a root beer party!

oldie but goodie
