Coach Ciara

You may be wondering about the "supposed" job interview I had the first day we arrived to the city. The interview was for a coach/teacher position at the New York Kids Club. The guy who interviewed me put me through a series of shadowing sessions with the children, and after two weeks of training I was officially hired. A lot of my training and shadowing was without any actual pay of course--too much work without the pay (this is the new york way). I soon realized after meeting all the staff throughout the 6 new york locations that they are almost all in the performing arts industry--actors, singers, dancers, etc. In their young to late 20's, they use this job as more of an in between job (they hope it's in between all their gigs).

Regardless, after the location of where I would work was chosen along with the team I would work with, I decided this job was for me. I was hesitant leading up to it--even up to the first day of Fall classes, but after the first week, I knew this was what AI needed to be doing right now. I currently teach 6 month olds up to 5 year olds. I teach Rock Climbing which is my most favorite. I also teach a gym babies class (which includes the mom/caregiver with them) and a gym juniors class which is gymnastics for 2-3 year olds. I was supposed to teach cooking as well, but the enrollment wasn't enough for my class. I have to be very energetic, and very enthusiastic. I can see why many people in the performing arts gravitate toward this job because I feel like I am performing everyday for the little ones and their parents. It is a little nerve racking because the parents are watching you teach their child which they are paying a HEFTY new york price for. The funniest thing I have heard so far was when I asked a little boy where he spent his summer vacation and he said, "the hamptons". OF COURSE. Why on earth did I ask? Seriously, these are ballers with a nanny and all. Most of the parents seem to be very down to earth too actually. It may be the neck of the woods we're in as well because Gramercy Park isn't known to be too shi-shi like the upper west side is.

Oh did I mention on the worst traffic light day I walk to work in 15 minutes? We are blessed. I don't teach enough classes to make a big ol' check but it is worth it for now!
