Martha Martha Martha!

A new acquantaince from Book Club works for Martha Stewart (Company) and invited the group to come to the first annual Employee Exhibit. I jumped at this opportunity as I thought I would see the creative products of these talented employees. Jill actually works in the IT department, but is nonetheless VERY talented. I was sure there were more employees just like her.
I ventured west to the Chelsea Piers where Martha has her building. I am just glad I didn't get lost in the dark and made it in one piece! When I arrived, I found the exhibit opened with complimentary cheese, wine, and crackers (SO new york). The first person's artwork I saw was Jill's of course! She put on display her (brand new baby Oscar's) baby booties. These were finely crafted shoes that she had made for a national baby bootie contest. I'm sure someone on the street here would buy them for $50 easy.

After I wondered through half the displays, I walked past Martha herself! My face went red (as it sometimes does in shock). I couldn't believe I had literally walked past her in her own building. I just didn't think she would be there so I was caught off guard. I soon found Jill and she saw that Martha was there and was surprised herself! She wanted to introduce herself and get a picture with Oscar and her booties and Martha...so a minute or two later, the picture was taken and we were all in a circle chatting about how adorable Oscar was. I took one more stroll to make sure I hadn't missed anything and then headed to the elevator to go home. Well wouldn't you know it, I walked in and there was Martha again! So it was me, Martha, and two other younger girsl she was talking with. They were trying to impress her with their status or something. We were on the 9th floor, so in the minute we were in there, I looked down and what did I see? LOL...she had cotton gym socks on with old black flats. It made me laugh. She was a normal lady who had talen and whom people respected and kissed up to. As we walked out of the elevator she walked out to her black shiny escalade and I put my scarf around my neck and walked briskly through the cold night breeze. I decided to walk home and enjoy the cute Chelsea buildings (since I hadn't explored this area before). I passed a movie set which I think they were tearing down. I passed camera men closing up shop, a TON of trucks with gear, two seperate tents full of unhealthy yummy treats and healthy snacks as well. I tried to discretely search for "stars", but none could be found. Who knows what it was all about, but it was fun to know that something was happening there. Maybe I would see it in a People mag or someone will gossip to me about it later that week.

Living in New York can be weird because random things like this happen and it always seems to catch me off guard. I ALMOST never become obsessive with taking pictures or meeting people (forget my rachel ray post for a moment), but I still get a little nervous around them! I wonder when this will die down? Maybe it never does. I really do see them as "normal" people and don't feel they really deserve more respect than others...maybe it's a curiousity thing?
