Family Home Evening - with Friends?

Year number one of marriage we watched all of Lyle's box sets of DVDs (and no, we did not watch all of Dave Chappelle together, nor will we ever, someday soon he will have to donate those to the trash). We did watch his Seinfeld, Arrested Development, and Faulty Towers DVD seasons. Once we moved to New York, I said "My turn!" So we started from square one with my Friends DVD collection (please note there are 10 total). I have all but the last one, which I will purchase when necessary to COMPLETE my collection. Because Lyle's schedule is so jam packed, we threw out the "no tv during dinner rule" I initiated in the marriage and reserved it for a later time - a time when we actually own a kitchen table to eat at and not a little coffee table instead. We do get the luxury of eating dinner together every night which doubles as Lyle's down time. Here is where we watch our 20 minutes of Friends each day. Lyle gets to watch TV while eating dinner and Ciara gets to help Lyle understand all the one liner jokes she cracks in reference to a Friends episode. We've got a win-win situation here.

In the recent past we watched "the one where no one's ready" episode, which is a CLASSIC by the way. Basically Ross arrives at the girls apartment ready to go to an important event for his museum job and no one is ready to go. They need to be ready in 20 minutes to arrive at the function on time (which is very pertinent) and things keep happening one after another to make them NOT GET READY. Ross yells at Rachel for being too picky about what she's wearing, demands she puts ANYTHING on, and Rachel instead puts on sweats to show Ross she's not going to his event. Ross proceeds to apologize, saying his function won't matter if she's not there, they make up, and supposedly leave to get to the function on time.

Picture this. Mid Ross/Rachel argument, Lyle pauses the DVD and says, "Let's have a little Family Home Evening about Friends right now." I laugh and soon realize he is serious. So we talk about how Rachel and Ross acted, how they should have acted, and how a Lyle and Ciara incident would be VERY similar in real life. Then we talked about what Lyle and Ciara would do if that situation occured in their home and how they would fix it. This conversation maybe lasted two minutes, but it truly cracked me up. The whole rest of the episode Lyle kept calling Rachel, Ciara. It was a very productive way to prevent such an event like that in our future. Let's see if it works! On a similar note, last month we finished a book we had been reading together. I would recommend this book to ANYONE. If you have a relationship with a spouse, a friend, a family member, ANYTHING, you should read this book. It is very helpful in showing love and receiving love from others. For our Family Home Evenings we would read a chapter out of this once or twice a month and now we're onto a new book, but we will reference this book forever (especially once we have kiddos someday).

So....whats your language(s)? I haven't looked at this book in a couple of years and now I am intrigued to bust it out again!

Mac and I actually read this while we were engaged. It still helps when I remember that he's going to want to express his love differently.

Okay, now after seeing this post I'm SOO going to watch that episode tonight! I will say that I'm HORRIBLE at remembering lines to ANYTHING but I have seen that episode thousands upon thousands of times (it IS my fav) and I like it even more because I DO know the lines! I'm such a dork! Also, I've never read languages of love but after your comments on it, i'm intrigued! To answer your questions about money makeover, you'll probably want to read the book. I haven't yet but kent is still pushing. Basically you live a VERY simple lifestyle, live with NO DEBT (including house and cars-he gives advice on how to do it) your whole life, and because of that you are able to save tremendously. I don't know if I can give 100% to it but I'm down for trying some of his advice and it definately helps. We're in the early stages but the plan is to have a phatty retirement after it's all said a done! So we'll see! It just puts a perspective on things and I do like his saying, "Stop trying to keep up with the Jones because the Jones are BROKE!" I laugh at that everytime! But it is one of those things to read and apply NOW instead of when you're 40 because the sooner you start saving the better! But I will say at times it pisses me off but maybe that's the worldly side of me coming out....!!

oldie but goodie
