I know what they say...

Friday was NYU's annual Talent Show. Lyle tried out last week and made it! He was playing the song he wrote for me, so I was especially excited to see it. Watching this talent show was a wake-up call that even though NYU is a prestigious university and these students are in PROFESSIONAL school, we still live in New York City, and these future doctors (some next month) are still 15 year old boys. WOW!

First of all, the MC was a professor who had a reputation for being very entertaining. He was a TRUE New Yorker: Jewish, thick accent, earrings, slicked back hair into a ponytail, fancy suit, and a mouth on him that was all NYC - crude and rude. The crowd LOVED IT! I mean the guy was funny, but it was definitely a PG-13 show. Next, we had the opening act. Apparently this one professor performs the opening act every year...in DRAG. He elected 8 other svelt boys from the 3rd and 4th year students to join him on stage. They dressed as ballerinas of some sort, but sang to some Hip Hop song. It was quite hilarious, and so appropo for New York City. I felt like I was in the west village or something. As a BYU grad (go Cougs), I wasn't used to this either: Lyle told me they (meaning 7 of the 8 boys - 1 was LDS) were having a grand ol' time back stage before and after the performance with some Jamacain rum and Coke. And after the performance they wound up in the audience with Bud Light after their beer run. Student doctors in tutu's carrying Bud Light - now that's something you'd never see at BYU. And that's not because BYU doesn't have it's own Dental/Med School.
Next up (literally) was Lyle Schofield. He was the 2nd act, and all the MC kept saying after the first act was, "how do you follow THAT"? Well, you follow it in the Lyle Schofield way, with tact and talent. Lyle sat down and threw the audience for a loop by saying, "I wrote this for my permanent girlfriend." I was sitting in the second row ready to video tape his performance, and everyone around me was like, "who? how is she permanent?" Then the guy sitting next to me (one of Lyle's professors) was like, "no, it's his wife, she's sitting right here." Wow, in a crowd of professional school students and professors, they couldn't figure THAT one out?

Anyway, Lyle's performance was amazing. I could tell he was a little nervous, but he did great! The light was SO bright on him, so I couldn't get a great picture. It was only his second time performing that piece in public. The first time was here, and I am SO SO glad he didn't make me come on stage to join him again. Our good friend (the only other dental student in the ward), Bryan, also played a song. I thought this picture turned out pretty well...if only Lyle had had the same lighting and background! We went out for pizza and dessert with the Larsen's after (including their brand new baby Steele) and had a great time. They leave in six weeks after graduation for Utah. It's cool to see where we will be three years from now. There is an end right?! We will miss them. The Larsen's have been good friends this year.

The talent show was full of "dental" humor and New York humor. I can't wait to go next year. Lyle was the only first year to be one of the 13 acts in this year's show (Lyle just told me there was another D1 student who played bass in one of the other acts), which was kind of weird to me. I guess all the other students were at home studying? I hope Lyle keeps performing each year...it's fun to watch him. See for yourself!

Wow! Lyle has a great voice! That does seem like a very interesting talent show, but I guess it is New York. I guess I can't be too surprised at the drag act. Anyway, it looks like it was entertaining!

I just wanted to say, as a fellow BYU graduate, that it was an honor to dance with Dr Culotta and the other 7 dancers. And, not everyone back stage was drinking as they all tried to get me to. Thanks for the compliment though
